Q 9. What Happens When
(a) Dilute sulphuric acid is poured on a copper plate?
(b) Iron nails are placed in a copper sulphate solution?
Write word equations of the reactions involved.

(i) Copper does not react with dilute sulphuric acid. So, no reaction will take place when diluting sulphuric acid is poured onto a copper plate. But when concentrated sulphuric acid is poured onto a copper plate, , hydrogen gas evolves along with the formation of blue coloured copper sulphate crystals. The chemical reaction for the reaction between concentrated sulfuric acid and copper is:
Cu + H2SO4 (conc.) -> CuSO4 + H2
ii) Iron is more reactive than copper. When iron nails are placed in a copper sulfate solution, iron displaces copper to form iron sulfate. Slowly, the blue colour of the copper sulfate solution turns green.
Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu

(a) How will she find the nature of the gas?
(b) Write down word equations of all the reactions taking place in this process.
Soln:
a) In which Saloni collect the gas in a test tube add a few drops of water. Now cover the test tube and shake well. After shaking, test the solution with blue litmus paper. if blue litmus paper will change from blue to red. Then the gas is acidic in nature if blue litmus paper will change from red to blue then gas is basic in nature.
The final result, the gas evolved by burning charcoal is acidic in nature because when we check the solution it changes litmus paper from blue to red.
b) Charcoal reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide gas.

When Goldsmith Polish the gold ornament, they use liquid called aqua regia ( a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid). when they dipped ornament into solution, the outer layer of gold dissolves into solution and an inner shiny layer appears. The dissolving of the layer causes a reduction in the weight of the jewellery.
