Class 8 Science Chapter 14 notes Overview

Electric Circuit

The path that a current takes in a closed-loop circuit is called an electric circuit. When the switch is closed the electricity is conducted. Although, when the switch is open then no conduction of electricity takes place.

Tester

The electric component checks the presence of electric current in a circuit called a tester. The tester contains an led bulb, which helps in indicate the presence of an electric current.

Conductors:– The materials which allow an electric current to pass through them are called good conductors of electricity. Metals such as copper and aluminium conduct electricity

Insulator:- The materials which do not allow an electric current to pass through them are called insulators or poor conductors of electricity. Rubber, plastic and wood do not conduct electricity.

Metals such as copper and aluminium conduct electricity whereas materials such as rubber, plastic and wood do not conduct electricity.

Do Liquids Conduct Electricity?

In the case of liquids, some liquids are good conductors of electricity while a few are bad conductors of electricity. The water obtained from sources such as pumps, wells, ponds and tap are not pure and contain several dissolved salts. Such water is a good conductor of electricity. While distilled water is free of salt and is a bad conductor of electricity. When we dissolved common salt in distilled water it makes distilled water a good conductor.

Most liquids that conduct electricity are solutions of acids, bases and salts.

Small amounts of mineral salts present naturally in water are beneficial for human health. However, these salts make water a good conductor. So, we should never handle electrical appliances with wet hands or while standing on a wet floor.

Chemical Effects of Electric Current

In Class VII, we have learnt some effects of electric current. Can you list these effects?

The passage of an electric current through a conducting solution causes chemical reactions. As a result, bubbles of a gas may be formed on the electrodes. Deposits of metal may be seen on electrodes. Changes in the colour of solutions may occur. The reaction would depend on what solution and electrodes are used. These are some of the chemical effects of the electric current.

Electroplating

Electroplating: The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another metallic object, by means of electricity, is called electroplating. Electroplating is an example of a chemical effect of current.

Electrode: It is the metallic rod/conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an electrolyte.

Applications of Electroplating: Electroplating is a very useful process. It is widely used for coating metal objects with a thin layer of a different metal. For example, chromium plating is done on many objects such as car parts, bath taps, kitchen gas burners, bicycle handlebars, wheel rims and many others.
