Q 3. Discuss the Effects of Deforestation on the Following.
(a) Wild animals
(b) Environment
(c) Villages (Rural areas)
(d) Cities (Urban areas)
(e) Earth
(f) The next generation
Answer:
Deforestation involves removing trees and plant life from an area for various purposes such as industry, agriculture, and other uses.
(a) Effects of deforestation on wild animals:
- The natural habitats of wild animals get destroyed due to deforestation and they tend to move to other habitats or are left to die without a proper shelter.
- Many animal species are in the range of extinction as they lose their natural habitat.
(b) Effects of deforestation on the environment:
- Photosynthesis in plants involves the absorption of CO2 from the Earth’s atmosphere.
- Destroying plant life can result in an increase in the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere.
- Increased concentrations of CO2 contribute to global warming by trapping excessive heat radiations within the Earth’s atmosphere.
- Global warming leads to rising temperatures on Earth and disrupts the natural water cycle, causing changes in rainfall patterns that can result in droughts and floods.
(c) Effects of deforestation on villages:
- Plant roots hold soil particles in place, preventing erosion caused by water flow or high-speed winds.
- Deforestation activities can increase soil erosion by removing plants that hold soil particles in place.
- Soil erosion can lead to a loss of fertility and humus, causing previously fertile land to turn into a desert.
- The rural people also depend on forests for food, fuel and wood. Deforestation reduces their source of food.
(d)Effects of deforestation on cities
- The ecological imbalance causes global warming which will affect all human beings.
- The risk of natural calamities like floods and drought in urban areas is increased by deforestation.
- Deforestation reduces the source of wood, food and natural climate for the next generation.
- The urban people also depend on forests for food, fuel and wood. Deforestation reduces their source of food.
(e) Effects of deforestation on Earth:
Deforestation involves removing trees and plant life from an area for various purposes such as industry, agriculture, and other uses.
- The climate of the earth changes due to global warming and seasonal variations take place throughout the year because of changing climate.
- The soil loses its fertility and is converted into a desert.
- Deforestation increases the chances of natural disasters like floods and droughts.
(f) Effects of deforestation on the next generation:
- As wild animals lost their natural habitats, many endemic plants are now endangered.
- The world is losing its beautiful floristic diversity due to deforestation which won’t be available for the next generation.
- Deforestation reduces the source of wood, food and natural climate for the next generation.
Q 4. What Will Happen if
(a) we go on cutting trees
(b) the habitat of an animal is disturbed
(c) the top layer of soil is exposed
Answer:
(a) If we go on cutting the trees
- Continued deforestation can destroy animals’ natural habitats, reducing biodiversity in affected areas.
- Deforestation can contribute to global warming, which further affects the water cycle, leading to changes in rainfall patterns that can result in droughts and floods.
- Risks associated with soil erosion, global warming, desertification, and the greenhouse effect increase with continued deforestation.
(b) If the habitat of an animal is disturbed
- The habitat in which an animal lives provides it with necessities such as food, water, shelter, and protection.
- Disturbing an animal’s habitat by deforestation can force the animal to move to another location in search of these necessities.
- Moving to a new location can increase the risk of the animal getting killed by other animals, leading to a decline in the animal population.
- Many animal species are in the range of extinction as they lose their natural habitat.
(C) If the top layer of the soil is removed
- Removal of the top layer of soil due to soil erosion can expose the lower layers of the soil, which are hard and rocky and less fertile due to the reduced quantity of humus.
- Continued soil erosion can turn previously fertile land into barren and infertile soil.
Q 5. Answer in brief.
Que A- Why should we conserve biodiversity?
Answer:
Both plants and animals have a mutual dependence on each other for their survival. As they are related to one another, the destruction of one will automatically destroy the other. Hence, biodiversity has to be conserved to maintain nature’s balance.
Biodiversity:- Biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals and microorganisms generally found in an area.
(b) Protected forests are also not completely safe for wild animals. Why?
(c) Some tribals depend on the jungle. How?
(d) What are the causes and consequences of deforestation?
(e) What is Red Data Book?
(f) What do you understand by the term migration?
Answer:
(b) People who live near the forests depend on the resources of the forests for their needs. Therefore, it is not safe for animals living in protected forests. The animals would be threatened by the presence of the human population. This results in the killing of wild animals and selling their products for money.
(c) The forests provide food, fodder and other resources to the tribal people. It is inevitable for them to depend on forests and their resources for everyday needs.
(d) Causes of deforestation:
There are a lot of causes of deforestation. A few of them are listed below.
- Forest areas are often cleared and converted into lands for various uses like agriculture, shelter and industrial purposes.
- Forest areas are cleared for wood and Firewood is a major product from the forests.
Consequences of deforestation:
- Soil erosion
- Greenhouse effect
- Loss of Biodiversity
- Floods
- Droughts
- Global warming
- Disruption of the water cycle
(e) Red Data Book is the sourcebook which keeps a record of all the endangered animals and plants. Red Data Book is maintained internationally by an organisation. India also maintains Red Data Book for plants and animals found in India.
(f) The regular movement of an organism or group of organisms from their natural home to another place at a specific time of year is known as Migration. They do this to avoid harsh weather conditions or to find suitable breeding grounds.
Q 6. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in factories and for shelter, trees are being continually cut. Is it justified to cut trees for such projects? Discuss and prepare a brief report.
Answer:
No. cutting down trees to satisfy the demands of the ever-increasing human population (human demands) is not right because forests are home to animals, insects, and birds. The tree also provides fresh air for both animals and humans by absorbing harmful carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Trees also help prevent soil erosion, and natural disasters like floods and droughts, and increase soil fertility. They are essential for maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
Causes of deforestation:
- Soil erosion
- Greenhouse effect
- Global warming
- Floods
- Droughts
Hence, it is most important to conserve forests.
Q 7. How can you contribute to the maintenance of the green wealth of your locality? Make a list of actions to be taken by you.
Answer:
To the maintenance of green wealth in my area, I plant more trees and encourage my neighbours to plant more trees and take care of the existing ones. I will create awareness about the importance of plants. It is important to involve children and youth in these activities as they can easily understand the issues at hand. We will not only plant new trees but also water and maintain the existing ones regularly.
Q 8. Explain how deforestation leads to reduced rainfall.
Answer:
- Deforestation involves removing trees and plant life from an area for various purposes such as industry, agriculture, and other uses.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, which helps regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Deforestation can lead to a rise in carbon dioxide levels, due to this heat radiation increase and contribute to global warming. Global warming can affect the water cycle, leading to changes in rainfall patterns and ultimately reducing rainfall i.e droughts.
